USNS Comfort (T‑AH‑20) is the second Mercy-class hospital ship of the United States Navy. Commissioned in December 1987, it was converted from the commercial oil tanker Rose City and falls under the jurisdiction of the Military Sealift Command.
The vessel has a full load displacement of 69,000 tons, with principal dimensions of approximately 272 meters by 32.2 meters, and a service speed of 17.5 knots. Its medical complex houses 12 operating rooms and 1,000 hospital beds (including 80 ICU beds), fitted with a helicopter landing platform, enabling stable surgical operations during open-ocean voyages.
In peacetime, it is maintained by a crew of 63 civilian mariners. In wartime, it can be fully activated within five days, with 956 Navy medical personnel deployed onboard for missions.
Primarily tasked with theater medical support, disaster relief and humanitarian aid, the ship was dispatched to New York to assist with COVID-19 patient treatment in 2020. It ranks among the world’s most renowned seagoing mobile hospitals.
