Yawuz is Turkey’s second ultra-deepwater drillship, constructed by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2011. Originally named Deepsea Metro I, it is now owned and operated by Turkey’s state oil company TPAO.
The vessel has an overall length of 229.2 meters, a moulded breadth of around 42 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 34,250 metric tons. Outfitted with ultra-deepwater drilling capacity, it can operate in waters deeper than 3,000 meters and reach a maximum drilling depth of 10,000 meters.
Painted in red and white livery and marked with a prominent Turkish national flag, it is equipped with a helicopter landing deck and state-of-the-art drilling machinery.
Deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean starting in 2019, it later shifted operations to the Black Sea. Serving as a core asset for Turkey’s offshore oil and gas exploration, it frequently carries out resource prospecting activities in disputed maritime zones.
